Teeth Straightening
Best Dental Treatments for More Attractive-Looking Teeth

Teeth straightening is a popular dental care project, one undertaken very often by dentists who are faced with patients with crooked, misaligned teeth. Crooked and misaligned teeth can be rather unsightly and can also be a recipe for disaster. When teeth are crooked and misaligned, there won’t be enough space between each tooth and some teeth may be in overlapping positions. The lack of space and the many hidden crevices serve as the perfect breeding ground for bacteria or food debris that turns into plaque and cavities. It’s only a matter of time before tooth decay enters the picture.

These are some of the reasons why one should never ignore crooked teeth. Many people live with their misaligned teeth because it is pretty expensive to get treatment for it. What they don’t know is that this problem can cause several other dental problems, which means you are in for an even more expensive series of dental treatments. So if you have crooked or misaligned teeth, don’t waste time and start planning with your dentist on how to straighten your teeth. You get stronger self-confidence in the process as well.

How to Get Straighter Teeth

1. Braces

Braces is the top-of-mind treatment option for crooked and misaligned teeth. This is the stuff that braces are made for, why braces were created. Crooked or misaligned teeth are the specialty of orthodontists. Braces are great for this problem because they produce permanent results and are able to adjust the alignment and positioning of teeth instead of just covering up any problem.

Braces are suitable for both children and adults, although it is recommended that children, at around adolescent stage, already get braces when the teeth are still more easily movable. This age is also the perfect time for braces because the kids can just get the whole thing over with so that they can face life’s future challenges with straight teeth. This also means they can help prevent problems associated with crooked teeth as they grow older. This can actually help them save a lot of money on dental care.

Braces work in a gradual but guaranteed process. The traditional braces feature wires that determine the ideal positioning of the teeth. The wire is connected to each tooth with a bracket made of either plastic or ceramic. The wire pulls at teeth slowly and guides them to their right position and alignment.  Regularly, your dentist will adjust the wires to make them tight enough to effectively pull the teeth and to ensure that the wires still represent the ideal position planned for the tooth in question.

2. Invisalign

Invisalign refers to braces as well, but not your traditional wired braces. Invisalign is a brand that manufactures invisible braces. Instead of using wires to pull the teeth, Invisalign invisible braces are like plastic molds or mouthpieces placed over the teeth. The plastic mold represents the exact positioning the dentist deems ideal for your teeth. Once the plastic mold is placed over the teeth, it works the same way braces does: it slowly guides each tooth to the proper position.

Invisalign takes a long time to actually complete the results it promises, just like traditional braces do. The length of time required by the treatment depends on the complexity of the case. If only minor adjustments are necessary, Invisalign may complete the treatment in a year. If major adjustments are required, treatment may take longer. According to dentists, however, some of the more complex cases are better resolved by traditional braces instead of invisible braces.

Invisalign braces are relatively new technology and are more expensive than the traditional wired braces.

3. Inman Aligner

The Inman Aligner is the latest development in the world of braces and teeth straightening. This new revolutionary orthodontic treatment promises straighter teeth in as fast as 6 weeks. It is considered as a new alternative to Invisalign braces because it is not readily noticeable, but it is not as invisible as Invisalign because it is made of a semi-transparent material instead of a fully transparent one and because the Inman Aligner features a single metal bar that lies across the teeth.

The Inman Aligner is also found ideal only for the front teeth mainly because its range of movement is a bit restricted. It simply uses a coiled spring, together with the metal bar, that slowly pressures the teeth to the correct position. The Inman Aligner works very fast and is characterized by shorter treatment periods, an advantage over traditional braces, which work more slowly. Inman Aligners are also removable and can thus be easily cleaned. You can also take it out when you have to eat.

This works pretty much the same way as the Invisalign braces, but there is one advantage: the patient will only use a single set of Inman Aligner throughout the whole treatment. As you know, in the Invisalign treatment, the dentist has to change the invisible braces every 2 weeks as the position of the teeth changes.

This is not yet a popular teeth straightening procedure so you may not yet readily find it in most clinics.

Retainers Used in Tooth Straightening

In less severe misalignment cases, dentists also recommend the retainers treatment instead of full braces. Retainers work like braces, but they are not as intrusive and are great for mild cases of teeth straightening wherein it would be impractical to subject the patient to a grueling period of braces.
