Pursuing A Career in Dentistry

Dental tech schools play a key role in advancing the dental industry of today. The dental career is now growing at a faster rate as more and more people start realizing the importance of dental health. The dental career also promises prestige and an opportunity to respond to needs that will always be highly demanded by every individual.

Dental tech schools are schools that specialize in the field of dentistry. Dentists, oral surgeons, periodontists, pediatric dentist, orthodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, and other specialists are all trained by dental schools.

Aside from dentists and specialists, other jobs in the dental field are trained by dental tech schools. There are dental hygienists, dental assistants, and so on, all of which require the education and training only available from dental schools.

Dental Careers from Dental Tech Schools

  • Periodontist
  • Endodontist
  • Prosthodontist
  • Dental hygienists
  • Dental assistants
  • Dental lab technician

1. Periodontist

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in periodontal dentistry, the branch of dentistry that deals with the gums. This career can be achieved with 4 years in dental school plus 3 years of specialty training in diagnosis, preventive, and treatment of all gum diseases. A periodontist also specializes in placement and maintenance of dental implants.

Gum diseases usually lead to tooth loss, so the role of periodontist in terms of tooth care is mostly preventive.

2. Endodontist

An endodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on endodontics or root canals. An endodontist needs 4 years of dental school plus 2 years or specialty training in the endodontics field. This training already applies to all types of root canals, from the routine root canal therapy to the most complex ones.

3. Prosthodontist

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who specializes in restorative dentistry. This includes restoring natural teeth and replacing teeth with artificial ones. After graduating from dental school, an aspiring prosthodontist requires another three years, or even more, of specialization.

The role of a prosthodontist extends beyond restoration and replacement of teeth; he also becomes responsible for treating facial deformities connected to the teeth. Prosthodontists are the specialists to go to when you are in need of dentures, fixed bridges, dental implants, crowns, and also veneers.

4. Dental hygienists

A dental hygienist is another product of dental tech schools. Dental hygienists are the ones who examine the teeth and gums of dentists. They are also responsible for polishing and cleaning teeth, applying sealants, and conducting preventive procedures such as application of other cavity-fighting agents. It is also the dental hygienist’s responsibility to explain to patients about the procedures they will undergo. They also have a large role geared towards preventive dentistry.

Hygienists are also trusted to keep the dental area as clean and as safe as possible. They are also trained to operate dental machinery and to complete records and charts. This is one of the most favorable dental careers because hours are flexible and the work can be done part time.

5. Dental assistants

As the term implies, dental assistants assist dentists and dental specialists in dental procedures. They are responsible for additional care and assistance for patients as well as office administrative tasks. They are not allowed to perform any dental procedures unlike dental hygienists.

Dental assistants do not require special training and usually learn their skills by doing practical tasks. Some, however, do receive some form of training from dental tech schools or dental programs offered by community colleges.

6. Dental lab technician

Dental tech schools also train dental lab technicians. Dental lab technicians are responsible for manufacturing prosthetics for dentists who in turn need it for their patients. Dental lab technicians create bridges, crowns, dentures, and dental ceramics. They produce these according to dentist’s specifications.

Formal training for dental lab technicians is offered in some community colleges and vocational schools. These dental lab trainings usually last for two years and already serve as an associate’s degree. Then they are also further trained by dental laboratories prior to hiring.

The Advantages of Dental Careers and Learning in Dental Tech Schools

Dental careers are quite enticing, which is why dental tech schools are now overflowing with a lot of students. The dental field offers practitioners the chance to offer service to others by providing genuine care and assisting in their health. Dentists and dental professionals are also able to start their own practice and career without getting pinned down by employment. They can also engage in continuous career advancement and training due to the evolving nature of the dental field.
